YACFMMORPG

While waiting for UT2K4 to install (6! CDs), I came across yet another crappy fantasy MMORPG called Vanguard - Saga Of Heroes. Just what the crowded MMORPG space needs, not just another MMORPG, but a fantasy-themed one as well! Wow. Original. Sounds exciting. No really. Especially when you discover Vanguard is being developed by ex-Sony emplyess who worked on EverQuest. All right! More crunchy level treadmill/grinding coming! They say in the FAQ Vanguard will be level-based. I can barely contain my excitement.

Oh they say they have some ideas they believe are 'revolutianry' but of course, they can't talk about them yet. Also, they claim they want to relieve the tedium and frustration of currents games. Being from EQ, they should be well acquainted with tedium and frustration.

They may have the answers. They may have discovered the way to make MMORPGs fun for both loser-boys with too much time (re: power gamer) or those sane people with a life (us, mostly, except for Peter, who's trying to get one). But the whole fantasy thing just turns me off (other turn offs will have to wait). For any MMORPG developers who may be trolling this entry, please consider some of the following ideas for a 'new' theme:

1. A world of high magic, where the magic is really based on high technology. Something akin to Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun.

2. Humanity has just invented a FTL drive. The stars are in reach, waiting to be explored. Who knows what's out there?

3. How about a world that is really a Dyson sphere?

4. If you want a fantastical feel, how about something based on Mayan or Aztec mythology?

Just some thoughts. Discuss .

Dude, you need to make better use of the Extended Entry section of the post form. Unless, of course, you are going for the Longest Post trophy.

I do use it, for the long posts. This isn't long.

That wasn't long, you should have seen the Lineage article before I discovered the "Extended Entry Section"...

Well, it looks long to me, Mr. 21-inch monitor!

I've been called Mr. 21"...never Mr. 21" monitor...

OK first of all - Mr 'I hate fantasy' shouldn't comment on fantasy.

Second, you prefer sci-fi - that sounds good, but I bet there area LOT of ideas that don't involve either magic or technology.

A cowboy game would be very interesting. How about one based on you being a policeman? Fireman? FBI agent? CIA agent?

I bet the police/fire one would be great for kids even.

Sure I can comment, especially when almost all new ORPGs are fantasy. Come on, something new. I'd be interested in a fanatasy world that was different and fun to play. Emphasis on different.
