Depressing the Younger Generation

A NY Times article, "Why Teachers Love Depressing Books" (requires login), talks about how today's Young Adult literature deals with some mature, and often depressing, themes. I noticed the same last year when reading David Gerrold's excellent Dingillian Family series.
