Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant

The first book of a new ("Last") trilogy in Stephen R. Donaldson's Covenant series, is due in October. It's called Runes of the Earth and Donaldson talks about it in an interview printed in the latest issue of Locus Magazine. Here's an excerpt.

It's been so darn long since I've read those books. I wonder if it's even worth trying to pick them up again, from what I remember, I wasn't too happy with trilogy #2.

The 2nd trilogy is much more philosophical than the first, and Covenant (spoilers!!!!) spends much of the time withdrawn into himself and is pretty much an annoying non-entity.

However, I found the trilogy to be an easier read the second time around than when I first read it in high school. I think the new trilogy will be on my shelf, since I like Donaldson, and because Covenant looks like he may play a more active role. Maybe.

The one thing I kick myself over though, is losing the original trilogy in hardcover. They had wonderful covers by one of the Wyeth's, much nicer than the Sweet covers in the first trilogy paperbacks and the second trilogy hardcover/paperbacks. I'm a big fan of Sweet, but the Wyeths were just plain better paintings.

Here in the UK Stephen Donaldson has a strong following.I have read and reread the first six books many times. The Runes of the Earth was a welcome return to the "Land".I only hope that Mr Donaldson can write at least six books again for the last chronicles!

I just finished the newest book (The Runes of the Earth) last evening. Now I'm all excited about this seires again! I enjoyed this new book very much. I was not sure I would like it without Thomas, but it was very enjoyable and perhaps he WILL be a major part of this new series??? I do not want to give anything away.....

Does anyone know the time table of the new books? I feel like I'm back in high school reading his books for the first time. I think these chronicals are my all time favorite and that says a lot!

:D I am a huge fan of fantasy and was delighted after reading the first two Chronicles. I just finished Runes of the Earth and can't wait for the next book. Does any one have any idea when to expect it?

Unfortunately the 2nd book of the Last chronicles won't be available until late 2007. Damn, that's a long time to wait but I enjoyed Runes of the Earth and will most definately be picking up the remaining books as they are released. Too bad we'll have to wait until sometime in 2013 to read it's finale.

Hey, I'm just finishing up reading The One Tree.
I've really liked this series and can't wait to read White Gold Wielder.
I started The Runes of the Earth about a year ago, before I had read the other books, and was a bit confused.
I wonder what it will be like when I pick it up again...
Can't wait for the next book!
2013... that's a long time away.
