Author Michel Basilières wrote and interesting and blunt article called The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Why Science Fiction Hasn’t Been Taken Seriously. In it, he takes some sf writers to task for producing low-quality work when they are obviously capable of high quality "literature". He also talks about how popular sf is misconstrued as quality sf. An interesting read. Even more interesting are the comments. The author, though, strikes me as someone who is in it more for the art than the entertainment value. Maybe reading his other column articles might shed some light...
