Minority Report Interface Created for US Military

New Scientist reports that the US Military is investigating a user interface based on hand gestures simlar to the one used by Tom Cruise's character in Minority Report. Raytheon is working on it and has even employed the researcher who proposed the interface to the makers of the film, John Underkoffler.

The system under development at Raytheon lets users don a pair of reflective gloves and manipulate images projected on a panoramic screen. A mounted camera keeps track of hand movements and a computer interprets gestures. "Your hand becomes a Swiss Army knife," says Underkoffler.
This doesn't surprise me. Speilberg and company went to great lengths to make the near-future technology as belivable as possible by hiring a think tank to forecast technological trends.
