2001: Space Odyssey: Based most closely on "The Sentinel" by Clarke, but in developing the story, Clarke and Kubrick worked with a number of other short stories.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind: Original to Spielberg.
Earth vs. the Flying Saucers: D.F. Jones great SF novel!
Forbidden Planet: There is a novel, but it was based on a story by some folks. IIRC, it was a story pitched to Hollywood, not one that appeared in the pulps.
From the Earth to the Moon: H.G. Wells, of course!
Invasion of the Body Snatchers: Jack Finney, of course!
It Came From Outer Space: Derived from some stuff by Ray Bradbury. You can hear echoes of Bradbury's wonderful prose in some of the dialog, especially the scene where the main characters come across the two "possessed" electrical workers. Great movie!
Logan's Run: Based on the novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson.
Mars Attacks!: Based on bubblegum cards!
No Blade of Grass: John Christopher. Good book.
Soylent Green: Make Room! Make Room! by Harry Harrison.
The Blob: Original, AFAIK. But, derived from many pulp stories.
The Invisible Boy: Hmmm...I have a feeling this was based "loosely" on something, but I'd have to look it up.
The Thing From Another World: "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell, Jr., writing as Don A. Stuart. Quick trivia question: Where did JWC get the DAS pseudonym from?
The Wild, Wild Planet: A stumper, as I've never seen it.
Watch the Skies: IIRC, it was based on a nonfiction book from the 1950's that talked about UFO's.
Village of the Damned: John Wyndhm. Excellent book!
...And that was from memory, while at work, so I could not consult my at home reference books!

Oh come on Fred ... Forbidden Planet is based loosely on the plot Shakespeare?s "The Tempest."
deserted planet = isolated island; mad scientist = magician; alien machine = magic
At least that's what I have read/been told. It seems to be accepted truth in the sci fi community. I?ve seen Forbidden Planet, but I have never seen or read "The Tempest". I love that the humans are the ones in the flying saucer.

There's that link, but it's unclear how "real" it is. I've read that in a number of books and in the Cinefantastique special issue devoted to the movie--but it's always in comments by third parties, never in comments made by the folks who made the movie.
Is "2001" based on Homer's "Odyssey"? You could make arguments about the same way...doesn't mean that Clarke and Kubrick actually wrote a screenplay by actively consulting Homer's tales.
