I don't think it was them getting rid of her as much as her deciding to leave. I know I enjoyed watching her on the show, but I think she was looking to do something else besides Dr. Who...

They didn't get rid of her. She has decided that she has a bigger role to play (bigger roles and more money). We shall see if it works, or it she ends up like a large number of sidekicks who left lucrative roles and then found out they were only wanted in that role!

From the Dr. Who perspective, sidekicks (assistants) come and go. And sometimes they return. Maybe K9 will be back!
