Is 11 'Mad Max'? They didn't call it Road Warrior anywhere outside the US, as far as I know.

There stated criteria seems silly considering that their no 1 choice is rife with gobbledygook science. How does Barbarella live up to no 2 and 3?

It's gotta be 2001 in my books. That movie is so damn good, its hard to imagine ever matching that achievement again.

Personally, I think Blade Runner is a tad overrated. [Looks the other way as the can of worms is reopened.] Sure, it was monumental for its time, but for me it broke the ultimate movie-going requirement - it left me bored. But that's just me. Everyone else in the world simply loves it. It consistently makes the tops of lists like these. I'd take any of the other movies (especially Gattaca)over that one...except for 19 and 20, which I have not seen.

11 is 'Mad Max 2'. The one where Max has to save the town/refinery place.

Personally, I'd keep most of those movies but rearrange the order. Gattica #2? Not for me.

Gattaca? Soylent Green? The Boys from Brazil?

What, no THX-1138? No Silent Running? No Metropolis (probably too early for the audience)? No Destination Moon?

Which Planet of the Apes? Hopefully not the remake!

:O

The list is from 2002?

Posted by Kim Rom on Monday November 06, 2006 at 12:20 PM

Yep, it's a 2002 list. Should have mentioned that, eh? :-S

Fred,

I completely agree. Metropolis not being on the list is a crime. The fact that it is old and it was originaly filmed in black & white is lost on the viewer very quickly. Everything about that movie is perfect.

3. The Matrix ----- WTF?!?!?!

I was very pleased to see "Akira" made the list at #19. But then I was stabbed in the back when "The 5th Element" was omitted. (OK, OK, OK, let's call "The 5th Element" a guilty pleasure!) :D

Hello - Forbidden Planet anyone? Sheesh...

And seriously Sleeper can't score on any of their criteria - so how did it make the list?

Posted by Scott on Tuesday November 07, 2006 at 6:45 AM

Pshaw. BARBARELLA is listed, and DARK CITY, the best and tightest SF film in the last twenty years, the one that should have been in the Number One spot, is not even mentioned? Absurd.

I'd delete Soylent Green (horribly dated dystopian silliness), Tron (sorry), RoboCop (though it's decent as an action flick) and The Boys from Brazil (not really s.f.) and add Brainstorm, Dark City, Metropolis and The Fifth Element.
