The blogosphere and news outlets are a-buzz with the just-announced title of the final Harry Potter book. It's called Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Why is this news? I don't see such fanfare over other upcoming titles. Why no publicity over, say, Pirate Freedom by Gene Wolfe (September 2007). I'm betting that will be a better book.
Obviously it's the sales numbers of the Potter books. I think it's safe to say it's a publishing phenomenon, though I cannot personally attest to the worthiness of that claim. At least one positive thing is coming out of Potter's success: kids are reading more.

When Erin Gray called me last night I asked her if she likes Harry Potter. She didn't have enough time to answer. Stupid 30 seconds.

No other series has inspired such parody-making where the titles are concerned, and the muggles just love to guess at the title of the next book.
