This list of unknowns (to me) seemed insane until I read the original post: he's listing the best "first" science fiction novels of recent years! An important distinction.
In that case, Old Man's War by John Scalzi belongs on the list.

Not to seem unfriendly, but "PapayaSF" was meant to be a unitary name, like "Bono" or "Cher", even though it is a combination of a word related to my fannish past plus my current location. I created it to be a unique pseudonym and search term, without thinking anyone would want to shorten it.

Quickie to point out that although that list is mine, the order is not (I at least have a shred of modesty - The Silk Code doesn't appear at all on my Amazon list and I added it last to my list on Squidoo.)
The Squidoo list has a great feature - readers can change the order of the list (but not add to or subtract from it). And, just below my picks, I created the second list which consists completely of reader's choices (though I did put in one novel there just to start the ball rolling).
These "plexo" lists that you can put up on Squidoo are lots of fun - thanks for posting your announcement - and Happy New Year!
PS 1 - Red Moon was (and is) my first on the list.
PS 2 - Good point, too, about the list and choices being for recent science fictin - I'll make that more clear in the posting
