12 (or 15) Sci-Fi Films Better Than Serenity

Not satisfied with the recent SFX poll that listed Serenity as the favorite sci-fi movie, Geek Monthly came up with a rebuttal list:

12 Sci-Fi Films Better Than Serenity
(I know...there are 15 on the list)

This is all about context, isn't it? If you weren't a browncoat before Serenity hit the big screen, you'll probably agree. Personally, there are only two or three movies up there are are higher on my list of favorite films.

I...barely like any of the movies on that list.

Oh! They went for the classics. I love The Adromeda Strain and Forbidden Planet. Some of the others I am not as much of a fan of or haven't seen. Serenity is a good movie, but it doesn't have enough sci fi cred to be "the favorite sci fi movie." At least of of these are recogniable names in the sci fi field. Go geeks.

"sci fi cred?" I don't follow.

Actually, looking at the list closer, I realize that those movies on there which also have books, I preferred the books over the movies.

(I Do Not Get 2001, I have Never Gotten 2001, I will probably Never Get 2001. I watch it every few years, thinking maybe I'll finally have some inkling what it's about, aside from slow space scenes, and I always leave perplexed and weirded out.)

Kristen's right about this list being pretty classics-heavy. But if they're going to be tapping the old stuff, where's The Day the Earth Stood Still? (inspired by Bates' story Farewell to the Master)

"Gort: Klaatu barada nicto" - He was one smooth talker, that Klaatu.

On that list, all of these rank lower than Serenity in my opinion:

Five Million Years to Earth (1967)
Dark City (1998)
The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)
Forbidden Planet (1956)
The Matrix (1999)
Twelve Monkeys (1995

And on any given day I like it as much as the remaining ones. There is a compression of information and effortlessness of plot and character that make it a classic.

IMO it's never advisable to include recent films (or books, or TV shows) on any sort of all-time best lists. Time is the only real arbiter of quality, and I think it takes a decade or so before something can be judged on its merits.
