Can You Name This Story? (Part 2)

Another reader writes in with a story description looking for a title. Do any of our readers know of which story she speaks?

You have probably discussed this book before but you seem like the folks in the know. A couple of years ago, the Science Fiction Book Club offered a book with the premise of a man who worked for a "company." His job was to determine which wars and/or military excursions the company would support and/or fund. He was married but had a mistress. Of course, he ended up on the run for his life because someone was out to kill him. He was not exactly the hero we could root for and several critics did not like the book. I was curious about the premise but lost all of the book information - like title and author. I tried contacting the SFBC but got no response. By any chance do you remember this book and how I can find a copy? Thanks for your help.

Can you name this story?

Sort of, kind of, sounds like Six Days of the Condor by James Grady. The book that the movie 3 Days of the Condor with Robert Redford was based.

As a former SFBC editor, I'll chime in to say that I think this is Richard Morgan's Market Forces as well.

Do you remember anything about people having dogfights in cars on British highways? That's a big part of Market Forces.

Hi, Fellow Readers:

I am the one who was looking for this information. I do believe that the name of the book was Market Forces. I am a teacher and was discussing this book with one of my classes that looks at ways in which media reflect and question social, economic and political trends in interesting and creative ways. I simply could not remember the name of the book for the life of me. Six Days of the Condor is a great book as well.

Too funny -- reading that RIGHT NOW, and boy is it dark. Page flipper for sure, but man, I just need some sunlight after a few hours with it!

If it wasn't -- I was gonna say Iain Bank's, but lead character is female.

Yay! I could have got this one. If you like MF, try some of Morgan's other stuff. The Kovacs trilogy (starting "Altered Carbon") is good pulpy fun.
