REVIEW: Chasm City
John asked for it, John got it.
REVIEW SUMMARY: Murder and revenge in a ‘hard SF’ setting.
MY RATING: 4.5/5
This is the second book Alastair Reynolds, and it takes place in the same universe as his earlier work, Revelation Space; however, it’s not necessary to have read it as Chasm City isn’t a direct sequal.
Chasm City is the story of Tanner Mirabell and his attempt to avenge the death of his employer and his employer’s wife. His travels lead him from Sky’s Edge, across 30 years of time debt to the Yellowstone system and, ultimately, to Chasm City. Along the way, Tanner experiences strange dreams that lead him to believe that he may not be what he thought.
I really enjoyed Chasm City. The story is engaging, there are techno-wonders galore, and, unlike his fist story, the characters are more skillfully fleashed out. Tanner is now where near the anti-hero that Sylveste was in the first book, and, although he is no saint, his story is interesting. The only thing keeping this from being a 5 star story is the fact that the book slowed down just over half way through (but it picked up toward the end!) and for one other reason that I can’t go into so as not to spoil the plot twists.
Suffice it to say, highly recommended.
