Kubrick 2001 is a Flash web site that purportes to explain what 2001 is all about. Its an interesting use of Flash anyway, even if I'm not sure I entirely agree with the interpretation of the movie....

Interesting interpretation.
In The Sentinel, the short story on which the movie and book are based, the moon monolith was a beacon to let its creators know that man has evolved to the point where space travel is possible. Where else would man make it's first venture?
I do wonder why this website was created.

Because a lot of people are confused as to the ending of 2001. I always thought the monolith was here to give man a leg up and then to watch over man. The ultimate goal being to lead man to the next evolutionary step, the starchild. I will admit that 20 minutes of psychodelic images near the end are a bit much. And the stark contrast between the journey through the monolith and the ending room is quite jarring. Still, its an interesting movie, if not fast paced or action packed.
Oh, and HAL went crazy because (and this is explained in 2010) he was told about the real reason for going to Jupiter but was instructed not to tell the human crew (in fact, he was to lie about it). His basic programming was to not lie to the crew. This created a conflict. The easiest way for him to resolve the problem was to remove the crew. Bingo, conflict solved. Only humans rule, while machines drool.

Clarification of my curioisty about the site's creation...
Why create it in Flash? Was this just a fun project for all the people involved? Or does it hold some commercial purpose?
