Alrighty, its time once more for my impressions of the anime I have watched this past week.
I've only 3 this time as it was a slow week. I've been busy with other things. Sue me.
First up, Blood: The Last Vampire. This one certainly lives up to its name. Its got lots of blood (although not Ninja Scroll quantities) and its got vampires. Set on a USAF Base in Japan in 1966, the story is of Saya, and her mission to destroy the last remaining vampires.
Hmm, well, I must say the animation itself was quite good. There were several outstanding scenes where the camera was placed in unusual positions or the camera moved as only an animated camera can. The one scene that sticks in my mind is an early one on a subway car. Impressive. The story, however, was very short and it seemed to leave a lot unanswered. I actually got more from the synopis on the website than I did from viewing the movie (and at about 40 mins, I hesitate to call it a movie). Maybe I missed something, but I don't think so. I'm not sure I can recommend this one because of this, but I come close because of the animation.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Disks 5 and 6 (episodes 15 - 20). Oh boy, things have really picked up. The Angels are really pressing the attack and NERV is barely hanging in there. While the animation looks dated, that doesn't detract from the storyline at all. The action is cool, the characters are interesting (and they actually change!) and the story is involving. In fact, NGE reminds me a bit of Babylon 5 in terms of structure. They both started off slow, introducing and evolving the characters, then the can was kicked over and the storyline took off. One word of cautiong though. Things are beginning to become very existential. I hear it the show becomes very philosophically heavy at the end. We'll find out, Walmart has just shipped the last two DVDs of the TV series!
Lastly, we have Record of Lodoss War. I've had good things said to me of this series. Unfortumately, when I watched the first episode, I fell asleep. Yup, fell asleep. Maybe I was just too tired that day, but the episode itself was really confusing and there wasn't a lot of explanation as to who was who and why things were happening. I understand that later episodes clear this up. I will give it another chance though. This time after I've had plenty of sleep!
