REVIEW SUMMARY: Two first-rate, highly recommended stories
MY RATING: ![]()
BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Two novellas set in the Revelation Space Universe
MY REVIEW:
PROS: Huge sense of wonder; compelling storytelling.
CONS: I cannot imagine how these stories could have been made better.
BOTTOM LINE: Two highly recommended reads.
Set in the Revelation Space Universe (not that you need to read them to enjoy these, but that sequence is comprised of the novels Revelation Space, Chasm City, Redemption Ark and Absolution Gap), this collection of two novellas is a rare find: 230 pages of continuously compelling and imaginative storytelling. I read the stories about a month apart, so I am re-posting the review for Turquoise Days (originally reviewed here) for completeness.

Cool, more Pattern Jugglers. Can't get enough of planetary-sized, intelligent life forms!

Where did you find it? I assume this is an import (from the cover, that is).
I'd like to see a US collection of his shorter works, either from the Revelation Space universe or not (or both!) come out in the US. Alas, for some reason, other than small press houses, this seems to be an increasing rarity.

I found this gem at BookCloseouts but, alas, they are out of 'em. They do have 3 of the Revelation Space books for under $5 as of today. Check the Locus Mag Index (and here) for other sources.

Wow, I read Diamond Dogs last night and have been thinking about it all day. I echo John's 5-star rating of the story. I think what I most enjoyed about it was that the participants had the choice at any time to turn back, yet for various reasons (pride, greed) they kept on, losing more and more of their humanity in their effort to beat the game.

I've found all of the Reynolds' short stories I've read (Spirey and the Queen, Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days and Galactic North) to be quite excellent. I read Revealtion Space, his first book, and only gave it 3 stars. But I am eagerly waiting to dive into the next book in the series, Chasm City, which JP liked, on my upcoming vacation.
