Celluloid Narnia

OK maybe they aren’t filming movies on actual film much anymore, but you can color me amazed when, during the previews ahead of War of the Worlds, I started seeing an intro to a movie that was strikingly similar to the beginning of CS Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Of course, it is exactly that – Disney has filmed the first book of Lewis’ tales in the land of Narnia for release on December 9th, 2005.

It would appear that the producers have optioned all 7 books in the series in case the first takes off. If it hits like Lord of the Rings or the Harry Potter series it will probably be well worth it.

You can see the trailer and gets lots more details on the production at Disney’s movie web site. Like LOTR, it’s shot in New Zealand (with a shout-out to my kiwi buds) and the special effects are being done by WETA.

  1. They ran the trailer earlier this year on ABC when they had the last Harry Potter Movie on TV. It was quite spectacular and I know my son is very excited about it.

  2. I’ve been getting increasingly excited about The Chronicles of Narnia movie for several months now. I’ve watched each of the behind the scenes videos that have been released, read a bunch of interviews about the goals of the director and actors and I watched the trailer initially online.

I was more and more impressed with everything I saw. Then when I went to see Revenge of the Sith, I saw the trailer on the big screen. I got goosebumps.

I honestly think this could be the next Lord of the Rings for fantasy movies.
