  1. Okay what lost it for me was the alternative for MP3 – Ogg Vorbis. Now I love open standards and something that will allow me to record and play music without having to pay somebody else to use thier codec, but from my investigations there has only been one company that really put an OGG codec in thier portable player. That would be RIO and you know how well they are doing. I just don’t get it – they complain since there is “noise” and “gaps” in this format but if you don’t want that either use a truely lossless codec or stick with the original medium. The list does not improve from there – it feels like a rant for these guys but come on.

I mean the whole battery topic – these little power cells have done nothing but increase in capacity while reducing in size over the years. They have opened a whole world of disconnected experiences yet the downside is not as common as they would have you expect with the doomsaying about exploding batteries.

    To them I say meh… Meh I tell you…

  2. What an incredible perspective they have, and by incredible I mean inane. Wow, lets take a look at some venerable technologies and in hindsight pick them apart. Don’t get me wrong I believe that there have been some monumentally stupid technology attempts – lets look at the whole Divx scheme where they wanted people to have timed purchases of movies. That was an incredible flop. Or how about the numerous bus technologies put forth by leading titans of the technology industry like i2o or infiniband – hmmmm yeah those really swept the industry. Or even better lets talk about one that actually saw the light of day, like hot-plug PCI – that went over like the proverbial lead balloon.

Instead these guys choose the internal combustion engine as one of the stupidest technologies? Uh, yeah no doubt by now there are better solutions but the “ice” is to be labeled stupid because it doesn’t fit their definition of efficient. No doubt more efficient things exist but there are other factors to consider other than that.

And I have to almost laugh out loud at the choice of Windows – yes, I have no love for Microsoft. But I can think of a number of OS’s that can fall into the stupid category faster than Windows. And for real technological reasons like hmmm lets see . . . no concept of virtual memory and no concept of ring protection in the OS.

*sigh* I guess I could continue to rant on but I think Tim summed it up best . . . meh

  3. Oh, and I have to comment that I too thought the article was quite lame. But then, just because you can post on an internet site doesn’t make you smart or even a journalist. See what goes on here every day…
