I dodged this topic when I read it yesterday because of the apoplexy I suffered from the very list itself. I would first heve modified Cinematical's article title to "7 Sci-Fi Movies For People (who are new to, or possibly, reluctant to) Sci-Fi Movies" if this were to get any "play" with a friend at all.
If they don't like them, why are you forcing it on them? If forcing sci-fi on someone is appropriate, then THX-1138 or 1984, or something a little more Orwel-lian would be much more appropriate in the list.
But back on point, if they don't like sci-fi then I would think twisting the sci-fi to meet thier tastes would be more appropriate. So to borrow from the apoplexy inducing list and also add one of my own I offer this: If you have a friend who doesn't like Sci-Fi but does like, let's say Westerns, then Serenity / (Firefly) or possibly Westworld might be closer to their tastes while still meeting the Sci-Fi (forced) criteria.
I just look at it this way. If your friend dosen't like Sci-Fi then that person is most likely more in to realism. So with that in mind, challenging the realist with sci-fi that tackles the some real / some not real material in "Contact" which deals with religion / universe / little green men might cause that friend to never return your call again, ever.
So my issue is with Cinematical's decision of which Sci-fi to force on your Sci-fi hater, if at all! I didn't know passive aggressive was shiek in periodicals, but apparently it is! Good to know.
There is a comical culinary corollary to the Cinematical list: "Here try this, it's just terrible! No no, go ahead, try it you'll hate it!" ![]()
