A Scanner Darkly: Full Trailer Online

A new trailer is up for A Scanner Darkly, the latest adaptation of a Philip K. Dick book.

I must say, the early teaser trailers left me cold. The draw-on-me special effects kind of creeped me out. Not helping the situation is that I keep seeing that commercial (for whatever product they’re selling) that uses the same effect. (Note to commercial directors: when the special effects of the commercial overshadow your product – that’s bad.) However, seeing this longer trailer is somehow more palatable. I don’t know if that will hold true for 80 minutes or however long the average film lasts these days. But, I’m willing to give it a try. At least if I tell myself that, then I will force myself to read the book beforehand, something I’ve been meaning to do since I bought it years ago.

  1. Have you seen Waking Life? Done by the same Director, it uses the same sort of overlay of animation on real-life-action. When I first saw the teaser for this, and saw that style, I didn’t even need to be told that Linklater was doing the movie, I just knew.

  2. Nope, haven’t seen it.

You do remind, though, of Ralph Bashki’s Lord of the Rings

which used the same technique of drawing on live actors. That film had a different look than Linklater’s though.

  3. The trailer looked pretty intriguing, but I’ve not read the story it’s based on.

And how nice to see that Robert Downey Jr. and Winona Ryder have found work.

I think the commercial you’re thinking of is Talk to Chuck (Charles Schwab.)

I’ve not seen Waking Life, but just added it to my Netflix list. I’ve really liked the other Linklater films that I’ve seen (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, School of Rock.) Plus, looking at IMDB, I see that he’s a Houston boy.
