I stumbled across an sf-related NPR link and thought it might be time to follow up last year’s post Genre Stuff on NPR.
- The topic of “The Interplay of Science and Science Fiction” is how science fiction writers use science to shape their stories and scientists are influenced by science fiction. Guests include sf authors Octavia Butler and David Brin as well as Lawrence M. Krauss (a theoretical physicist…still a good gig). [Link via Mostly Nonsense]
- Two other shows focus on Butler’s impact as a writer: “Octavia Butler Set a Rare Standard in Sci-Fi” (with Greg Bear), “Octavia Butler’s Lasting Impact” and “Octavia Butler: Eye on the Stars, Feet on the Ground“
- “Science Fiction Writers Target Global Warming” with Rick Kleffel looks at how writers like Michael Crichton, Kim Stanley Robinson and others treat the subject of global warning.
- “SciFi Themes Invade the Literary World” also with Rick Kleffel discusses how sf themes have spread beyond their genre-confining boundaries and into mainstream literature and movies.
