Forbes magazine has a slideshow of the Top-Grossing Film Adaptations as per U.S. box-office gross, unadjusted for inflation. Although they did not include movies based on comic books, the list is dominated by science fiction and fantasy titles. Perhaps that’s not so surprising considering the love/hate relationship genre fans have with film adaptations.
Here’s the list:
- Harry Potter Series (2001 – 2005)
- Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001 – 2003)
- Jurassic Park Series (1992 – 2001)
- Forrest Gump (1994)
- The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (2005)
- Jaws (1975)
- How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (2000)
- The War of the Worlds (2005)
- The Exorcist (1973)
