I see your point when they are read back to back. A while ago a watched the entire season first season of Columbo, and they used the exact same "killer left a clue behind" camera zoom shot every time. It did get old pretty quick. However, all in all, the Solstice Chronicles still rocked and I'm looking forward to the next bit of fun to fall from the quill of Mr. Patterson.

Bob,

The list-dump effect was one of those things that took me out of the story because it showed a trend in the author's style. Back when I was reading a bunch of Asimov books back-to-back, the same thing happened every time Asimov used the phrase "to be sure", for which he seemed to have a fondness.

Jeff,

You may see your work as a "rush job", but it certainly doesn't show. My gripes are minor and listed for completeness. Solstice Chronicles is thoroughly enjoyable. Nice job!

The "list" gimmick is actually my sad attempt to emulate Alan Moore's style. It works better in comics when the text accompanies an actual picture of the things being listed. And as I mention in the foreword, most of the stories were compressed for physical size to fit inside a card, so I used every shortcut I could.

Great review. I, too, loved the wide range of subjects tackled by Jeff. However, I have to disagree with the "list dump" aspect. I thought Jeff did that on purpose as a way of keeping a common thread running through the stories. I found the lists clever and amusing.

Thanks for the review. Your opinion of the stories is pretty much identical to mind. Most of them ended up being last minute rush jobs and it shows on a few.

For those interested, the book is available at Lulu, in either print or as a PDF download:
