UPDATED: David Tennant Leaving Doctor Who?

It’s hard to find a reliable Time Lord these days…

The Sun is reporting that the second actor to play Doctor Who in the new series, David Tennant, will be following in the footsteps of the former Doctor and will be leaving the show. Apparently Tennant has been bombarded with film offers after appearing in the last Harry Potter movie and will be leaving Doctor Who in the middle of season 3 of the new series.

UPDATE: As mentioned by commenters, the BBC is denying this.

  1. As much as I like Tennant as the Doctor, and as much as I liked Eccleston before him – I think this is good for the show.

I’d much rather have good, quality actors doing short stints as the Doctor, than have a crummy actor with a bad interpretation play the Doctor for years.

  2. Following the Who news for the past few years, I’ve got the impression that you can never believe anything the Sun prints. I think the Sun article was saying that he would leave halfway through season 4 (which the BBC points out hasn’t even been commissioned yet) with Robert Full Monty Carlysle as Doctor Eleven.

I’m not sure which part of that is harder to get my brain around.

  3. Thanks Bryan and Jared. I try not to perpetuate rumors. I now know better than to trust The Sun! In the meantime, I’ve added the Rumor-labeling question mark to the post’s title.

Jim, I agree wholeheartedly. I’ve enjoyed both Eccleston and Tennant as the Doctor.

  4. @Jim: According to the Doctor Who canon, there are a limited number of revjuvinations a Time Lord can go through before actually dying for good. I think there are something like 2 or 3 left.

  5. Yeah, Josh, but if he’s truly the last timelord left we can assume the others set up some kind of contingency plan.

And he’s WAY over twelve if you count all the transformations in Curse of the Fatal Death (which I consider canon, I don’t care what anyone else says.)

    (I’m not listening.)

  6. WHAT??!?!?!?!?????? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!1

    Say it ain’t so!

I hope this is just a rumor. Why can’t we keep a stable Doctor? I was just getting used to Tennant.

    …..reads further…..

ah, BBC is denying this. GREAT!

  7. doctor who is kool:-P David Tennant is good as the doctor so fall of life. I do not want him to draent again some time soon.

    enjoy and be shocked!!!:-P

  9. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I LOVE DOCTOR WHO SO MUCH!!!!!!!! THE OTHER DOCTORS WEREN’T SO GOOD AND HE IS MY FAVOURITE!!! HE CAN’T LEAVE!!! I WILL CRY!!! I MEAN I DON’T EXPECT TO STAY IN IT FOREVER BUT IT’S STILL TOO EARLY TO LEAVE THE SHOW!!! HE CAN’T!!! I’M SOOOOO SAD NOW…:(:(:(

  10. I dont want David Tennant to leave Doctor Who :(, I thought that he would stay, plus David is a lot more fun than Chris Eccleston :D and he didn’t quit doctor who after one series! :-S

  11. Didn’t they say in the last series with the “new” Master … that a Time Lord lived for 900years? So surely he has as many rejunivations in that short life time as he wants … we won’t be around to see them let alone count them all! ;-) I am, of course, prepared to be corrected as I’m sure real fans out there will know. As for David T leaving, well, has to happen sometime. They have made several hints at it over the past few episodes haven’t they? Or is it my imagination. Didn’t the Oods say something about his song coming to an end …. and what with the episode the otherweek with that woman saying “he isn’t MY doctor” …. and there have been other little hints too that I can’t quite remember. He’s done a fantasic job … although Wurzle Gummage, I mean, Jon Pertwee, was my favourite with Tom Baker in a strong second place. Actually, thinking about it, David has been the best overall – but it’s so difficult to compare with the computer graphics and effects that they have (compared to the oldies). But can someone answer me one question … why couldn’t this doctor have a scottish accent? I LOVE David’s accent – and why couldn’t he use it? Afterall Christopher before him had a northern accent! Hey ho.

  12. this post was made 2 years ago surely it cant be true as he wud have left by now also he is my favourite doctor

  13. Time Lords ‘only’ regenerate 12 times before they actually die. So that’s a total of 13 different forms *counting the original form they were born into*, so the show can’t switch out the Doctor every few years and say true to the Dr. Who legacy.

  14. K9, no, John Simms is/was the Master. The new Doctor is Matt Smith… not really looking forward to David leaving :( he and Tom Baker are the best Doctors ever and I don’t want him to go! Plus, the sooner he goes, the sooner the show ends :( I’ve heard there are a limited number of regenerations, too.
