Is Heroes Overreaching? »
This! Is! Rama!

[From Sci Fi Wire] Morgan Freeman tells the MTV Movies Blog that he is still working on a film adaptation of Arthur C. Clark's Rendezvous With Rama. I say, "Bring it on!"

I remember reading Rama back in the day and being blown away by the story. What's not to love about a group of scientists exploring a 30-mile long cylinder floating in space? But as Freeman notes, Rama isn't your typical summer SF movie. It's actually quite free of anything exploding or marauding aliens invading Earth. It's about humanity and big science ideas. I'd love to see a film version of the book.

Despite the issues of adapting it to film, Freeman still believes it's worth doing, and I agree. I'd like to see more, smart SF movies. Rama is a good start, if it ever gets made. I'd also like to see Eon as film, or any of the Culture novels by Banks, even though they usually have stuff exploding.

You have to admit that the last line of Rama warms the heart of any studio executive that looks toward sequels.

"Ramans do everything in threes."

And it would be a perfect line if they did intend to film the novels he did with Lee (although I think they are far inferior).

Rama had a story? I don't think so. A premise, at most.

If they decide to do sequels they'll have to construct them from whole cloth. The actual Rama sequel books were atrocious.

By the time Hollywood is finished, Rama will be full to brimming with explosions and marauding aliens. I am willing to put real money on this.

There will also be some emo cover of a classic song on the TV ads, like Across the Universe.

Rama, like the first Ringworld book, would be better served by one of those CGI Drama-mentaries like Alien Planet or The Future is Wild. I'd rather see Morgan Freeman narrate that.

Jeff: I agree. And watch, Rama will star Will Smith coming to a theater near you(H)

What was the last movie with this type of approach?

You guessed it; "The Fountain"

careful what you wish for.

I think Footfall would make a good film. Interesting aliens, solid action, a protagonist you can root for, etc.
