"Can anyone think of a show where the 'geeky' person was actually show as being heroic or sympathetic?"
How about the math geniuses on NUMB3RS?

The guy, whose name I forget, from ALIAS. He was shown, several times, as being very sympathetic, even heroic at times.
It's not that geeks aren't portrayed as sympathetic. They're just never portrayed as socially adept. The popular image is, even if you're Bill Gates, you're still getting wedgies and playing D&D in mom's basement.

You know, if I'm going to be "buried" in a Star Trek-style coffin, I would want to be shot into space; not put into the ground! So, until it comes with a space-flight, I think I'll pass...

re: sympathetic geeky person - early Buffy had a very sympathetic Willow. You know, before she turned into the skin flaying witch. ![]()

"Regenesis" has a number of sympathetic geek characters, and for the most part the science is plausible (if overly-glamorized).
I can't think of another modern series that treats scientists with so much respect.

It's a Canadian production, but I've heard it may be getting syndicated here in the US. It'll be interesting to see how well it does, since it doesn't shy away from criticizing the current administration's absurd attacks on science.

Can anyone think of a show where the 'geeky' person was actually show as being heroic or sympathetic? I can only think of Hiro.
Spock
Skully (Mulder is sort of a geek as well...or do i have this turned around)
Data
7 of nine
Chief (He made a stealth Viper...that is pure geek)
Samantha Carter
River Tam
Dr. Quentin Q Quinn (actually I think the running joke is that he is the only sympathetic character on the show)
Frylock
