I just found these new, international trailers for the upcoming Speed Racer movie and all I can say is “Wow! It looks like a live action ‘cartoon’.”
The Wachowskis are pushing the visuals over the edge again. Even if the movies sucks, it will certainly look cool doing it.
See trailer 2 after the jump.

But more importantly, I recently saw one of these trailers on the big screen and I was totally unimpressed. The visual style has really turned me off and the re-make of the Mach 5 looks atrocious. Bah!
I don’t know – I like the new Mach 5. I don’t want to see an exact replica of the cartoon of my youth since I have seen it now and found it incredibly bad. I look forward to seeing this with my kid and while I may not watch it in the theaters – it will be one for our house.
In the trailers I’ve seen in theaters — and hopefully it just the trailer mashup — it’s way too frenetic. The racing sequences were impossible to tell what was going on, the live action seemed to work, but yes HIGHLY stylized. On the big screen, the trailers were more annoying than impressive. And then i think about the whole speed racer thang — i’m not sure it’ll make for an engaging feature film. I sense a flop…. not all 20-minute kid cartoons can be stretched into a full feature film, and I think this might be a prime example.
They call it: “Car Fu”
All distinction between movie and PlayStation game is erased:
But the most puzzling conundrum that movie aficionados are facing is, What is the best drug to take before watching this? Beer? Jolt soda? Dramamine?
Tim – bah, your always so ‘reasonable’ and ‘open minded’. Never do you knee-jerk react or dump all over something without seeing it. Are you a robot?
Matte – Interesting point about the game aspect. I seem to remember the directors contributed to The Matrix Online and it was a complete disaster. Maybe we will find that they aren’t any good at game design and it hurts this movie.
Scott – Who are you calling a robot? Me thinks you are obviously trying to distract the robot hunters that are actively on your trail. I am also highly insulted by that “reasonable” statement. I have an image to uphold…
