Believe It Or Not: Greatest American Hero Feature Film!
In a move that will be sure to please John, Sci Fi Wire is reporting that Stephen J. Cannell, creator of the original Greatest American Hero TV series, confirmed that a feature film, based on the TV show, is in the works.
They have a screenplay and have hired a director and are working to put the movie together. Rumor has it that the director is Stephen Herek, probably best known for Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, and lesser known for Critters and Mr. Holland’s Opus. This will be a reboot, with new cast members in the familiar roles.
Even better, it seems that Cannell wants the original cast, Connie Selleca, William Katt and Robert Culp to be in the movie, in roles larger than cameos. Additionally, there appears to be a some webisodes in the works, starring the voice talents of the original cast.
What with all the comic heroes making the transition to the silver screen, it was only a matter of time before Greatest American Hero received its shot as well. However, will a light-hearted superhero film work? Is the movie going audience only expecting dark, brooding heroes now? We’ll see, and John will be first in line at the theater.

I know when I first heard about this I was sure it was going to suck. I figured it would lose all it’s originality and charm. Then, recently, I heard and interview with Cannell and I changed my mind. With him involved it has a chance. Of course the studios could get too involved and ruin it. But I have some hope. For now.
How long before they “reboot” shows like Salvage One and Quark?
When will we get a movie reboot of M.A.N.T.I.S.? Doesn’t the world need more of that?
(Answer: No.)
Actually, I keep hoping for some of the odd super-heroes to appear, now that we’ve clearly got a major industry here. Where’s a Swamp Thing movie? A good one. A Flash movie could be fun, I certainly enjoyed that short-lived TV series.
(I know. This has nothing to do with Great American Super-Hero. But I never watched that. No, I don’t know what’s wrong with me either…)
I’m with you, Pete. I really liked those hokey TV shows like The Flash. I even liked M.A.N.T.I.S
Not too hopeful aboult The Greatest American Hero, though.
With the classic cast hanging around, this sounds like a passing of the torch. I really have no idea how the series might get updated, but I sure hope some of the charm and mystery make the transition!
Why not a dark and brooding Ralph? Sort of a Stand and Deliver meets Hancock. And when will we see a Red Tornado movie? Stupid DC can’t see beyond Bat and Super men.
I would very much like a Green Lantern movie, please…
…
As long as they don’t relaunch Greatest American Superhero under the direction of Jeph Loeb and Tim Kring (the Heroes guys) then we should be all right…
