A science fiction blog featuring science fiction book reviews and with frequent ramblings on fantasy, computers and the web.

SF Tidbits for 10/23/08

By John DeNardo | Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 12:08 am

  • Free Fiction [courtesy of QuasarDragon]:
    • I saw Joe R. Lansdale earlier this year at the Nebula Awards weekend and he owned the room. Check out Joe’s reading of Flaming London at The Agony Column and see why.
    • The Summer issue of Weird Tales is downloadable as a PDF. [Nick Mamatas]
    • @Feedbooks: “The Tree on the Hill” by H. P. Lovecraft (1934).
    • Audio Fiction @A Bite of Stars, A Slug of Time, and Thou, read by Elisha Sessions:
      • “The Squirrel Cage” by Thomas M. Disch
      • “Things” by Ursula Le Guin.
    • The latest Starship Sofa features fiction by F. Paul Wilson and Terry Bisson.
    • Free Excerpt @Pat’s Fantasy Hotlist: The Six Directions of Space by Alastair Reynolds. (See SF Signal review)
  • Interviews & Profiles:
    • BlackFive is collating Baen Book’s video interviews with Military Science Fiction Writers. Interviewees include Tom Kratman, Michael Z Williamson, David Drake, Mark Van Name, and David Weber.
    • SciFi Wire interviews Jay Lee, the Writer/Director of Zombie Strippers!
  • Over at SciFi Scanner, John Scalzi asks: Are Mad Scientists Unfairly Maligned?
  • io9 asks: Is Algis Budrys What SF Should Have Been?
  • Cover Pr0n: Next Read shows off the covers of 10 Space Opera titles from Gollancz. I dunno…I do like the simplistic covers here, but I really like the SF Masterworks covers better.
  • There’s a sale at Penny’s! Just kidding. But there is a sale at Norilana Books.
  • This isn’t the first time someone noticed the trend of Urban Fantasy book covers to show women facing away from the “camera”. This is, however, the first I’ve heard of someone putting together a video of all these covers. Check out Urban Fantasy Butt Parade!
  • David Cronenberg’s The Fly is the Kevin Bacon of scifi connections.
  • No fat clips has a way-cool video of the SciFi Channel’s “Movies” bumper.
  • Lists:
    • @Fiction That Matters: How to Write a Science Fiction Story in 7 Easy Steps.
    • Lisa Paitz Spindler lists 13 Fun Science Terms. “Naked singularity”…tee hee…
    • @Geekend: The top 5 sci-fi/fantasy chick flicks.
    • @Topless Robot: The 5 Reasons Luke Skywalker Is a Complete Idiot.

I love the SF Masterworks books. They are well made and enjoyable to read.

I wish there was a relatively inexpensive place to buy them in the US.

@Lisa: You’re welcome!  Keep ‘em coming!

@Martin: Tell me about it.  I’ve run across a few cheap used copies  – lucky me because I can’t justify buying all of them considering I already own different editions of the same books.  Hello, my name is John and I’m a biblioholic.

That Geekend top 5 link is http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/geekend/?p=1542

But I didn’t think Deep Impact was a movie for anyone. :/

Fixed.  Thanks, Jeff.  If Fred K. should ever be unable to fulfill his proffreading duties, I’ll turn to you.  :)
