Orbit Introduces the $1 eBook
From an Orbit press release:
Orbit – in partnership with a number of major ebook vendors – has launched an innovative promotion offering one ebook for sale each month at the introductory price of $1.00. At the end of the promotional month the cost of the ebook returns to its standard price and a new book will be offered at the discount. Details of the promotion are at www.onedollarorbit.comThe promotion will include The Way of Shadows by debut author Brent Weeks, Empress by Karen Miller, as well as classics of science fiction such as Use of Weapons by Iain M. Banks.
VP and Publisher of Orbit Tim Holman said: “We believe that this promotion will give readers a great opportunity to discover new writers. Most of our consumer marketing has an online focus, and the digital marketplace offers the perfect platform for price-promotion initiatives such as this. It will be very exciting to see how effective it is. The range of titles chosen for the promotion includes a mix of frontlist and backlist, from both new and established authors, and we will be monitoring the performance of every title very closely.”

This seems like a very reasonable offer for people who want to try new authors or want to read on the go. The question is, would you buy one?

I think this is a great idea. As a matter of fact, I already bought Way of Shadows.
This will definately let me try some new authors.
Hmmm…multiple formats or only one format like (blech) Adobe? DRM or no DRM? Those are my questions before purchasing (at any price).
Secure eReader and Microsoft Reader at Fictionwise (DRM and formats not compatible with my current book reader). Mobipocket for the Kindle at Amazon (right format, but DRM and won’t work on my reader). Mobipocket (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Amazon, if you didn’t know) has the right format, but DRM, so for a buck, I’ll buy it there. And hope for the day when all the DRM goes away and we can settle on one useful format across all readers…
Probably not, if only because I’m of those stodgy few who prefer reading printed formats. Amazon Kindle and similar readers don’t quite cut it.
If I had a Kindle I’d buy them, but I wouldn’t as PDF or some solution for reading on the PC.
If it has DRM, no sale. Not even at a dollar. I’ve been burned by that once and don’t plan to be burned again.
Otherwise, definitely.
Without DRM, I’d definitely buy the titles for that price. Except that the offer seems to be valid in the US only.
