Tube Bits For 02/06/2009
  • Talk about a gutsy move, Sci Fi Channel announced the two hour pilot for the Galactica spin-off series, Caprica, will debut on DVD on April 21st in a limited edition, uncut and unrated version. Just wow. They must be very confident the show is good, or else they risk negative word of mouth destroying the show before it's broadcast premier in 2010.
  • Film.com has an interesting list of the best SF shows for non-SF fans. LOST makes the list as does the overlooked Journeyman and several others. In this case, non-SF fans means those who have issues with outer space based SF, which is a shame really.
  • AMC is in the process of re-making the classic SF show, The Prisoner, starring Ian McKellen as Number 2. You can see a sneak peek here. I can't really glean much about the show from the video, other than I really like Gandalf. Here's to hoping it isn't as inscrutable as the original and resists the temptation to be a reflection of the 'times in which we live'.
  • BBC America is gettin' all SF in the coming months. The BBC (and far superior to the American) version of Life on Mars follow-on series, Ashes to Ashes, will be coming to BBCA in March. A2A isn't as good as LoM, but it's still decent. Three more SF series will debut on BBCA later in 2009:
Being Human, Primeval season (series) 2, and Survivors. Of these, only Being Human doesn't interest me. But I bet all of these have interested the, errr, torrents.

  • Sci Fi Wire interviews Tamoh Penikett about his role as FBI agent Paul Ballard on Dollhouse. From Boomer to Eliza, Tamoh is one lucky guy.
  • Doc Arzt has posted a recording of LOST's Gregg Nations' (script supervisor and the guy responsible for keeping the continuity intact) appearance on NPR. Very interesting.
  • Are you lost on LOST? Then ABC has you covered with their new LOST Untangled video guides. This week's gives us the first 4 seasons in about 30 seconds, then works its way through Wednesday's episode and a bit about next week's. Funny stuff, and it never occurred to me how much like a soap opera LOST is, especially after watching this video. Note to Heroes writers: this is how to write a soap-ish show without failing.

  • IO9 is touting Better of Ted as a potentially smart funny SF-ish show debuting on ABC in March. Watching the trailer, I'm not sure. Yes, it has some funny moments, but it feels like a one trick "let's make fun of this technology" pony. It'll all come down to the writing. I'll let you decide (and the music in the beginning is very familiar, but I can't place it):

  • Torchwood returns for season 3, and they have a trailer to prove it. Warning: There will be man-kissing.

The music at the beginning of Better of Ted for the Veridian commercial sounds a lot like someone's doing a riff on a Coldplay tune.

Speaking as someone from the UK, Being Human is a far better show than either Survivors or Primeval.  I highly recommend giving it a chance.

I've blogged about LOST as "soap opera" twice:

The OTHER Woman: LOST as metaphysical soap opera

and

Why LOST may be the best Soap Opera since the invention of the Wireless

Not to pick at nits, but - It'll be Primeval Series 3 (season 2).  I got frustrated as soon as series 2 premiered. They took a fun twist of an idea, then drove it down hill at speed.
