Tor has just posted Spiritwalk by Charles de Lint, the 1992 sequel to Moonheart, as a free eBooks in various formats (PDF, HTML, Mobi, ePub).

Sounds a bit like Brooks' "The Woods Out Back", or if this one came out before then it's the other way around.
In any case, sounds like a good read.
