Tuesday Ted: George Dyson
Author, and son of Freeman Dyson, George Dyson gives a short presentation at TED in Feb. 2002 about everyone’s favorite nuclear bomb driven spaceship, Project Orion. The sheer awesomeness of that idea is exceeded only by its power to irradiate everyone within miles of its launch. Still, build this in a Lagrange Point and light that sucker up!
Want more bomb powered spaceship goodness? Well, the BBC produced a documentary entitled To Mars by A-Bomb. You can see part 1 below, which includes interviews with both Freeman and George Dyson.
That video, along with a lot more cool stuff about Orion type ships can be seen over at Centauri Dreams in their Space Voyaging a Century Out post.
It’s really disheartening to realize where we could be in spaceflight versus where we are. Some of us aren’t getting any younger you know… (Looks at John)
