Thanks John for pointing these out. I used to regularly check Free Speculative Fiction Online for new stories – but now it is more convenient to just read your post about the updates!
I just wanted to say that when I read and reviewed “Sergeant Chip” last summer I found it to be an enjoyable read about a good old dog. It was touching – in its own way – and is kind of like a science fiction version of “Old Yeller!” Oh, and it is currently listed at #110 on Sci-Fi Lists top SF short stories. Definitely recommended!
It’s is good to see Bradley Denton getting some attention, I have been reading his stuff sence his first novel “Wrack and Roll”.
It is also nice to know that I don’t have to pull out my limited editions to read a few these stories anymore.
@Rusty: I also thoroughly enjoyed “Sergeant Chip”. But please do check the FSFO site. It’s great, one-stop shopping for free fiction. Unless you’ve already read everything they point to?
@Michael: “I don’t have to pull out my limited editions..”
That’s even more OCD than I am. Pleased to meet you!
Rusty and John: Thanks for the tip on “Sergeant Chip’. I just printed it out and look forward to reading it. The only problem with all the free fiction, and I mean only problem, is I never know what to read. I can’t read it all, so I usually pick an Author I’ve read before, or pick a title that sounds interesting. Not a good system. Never read Bradley Denton before. Any recommendations in the future would be greatly appreciated.
PS – John, I posted previously about my Nebula picks and the fact that I was going to the Awards Banquet. It was incredible. Sat next to Elizabeth Moon and Ian McDonald. Would love to talk to you in a separate post about my experience.
Dino,
I totally agree that the problem with so much free fiction is trying to figure what to read! If you are interested there are several web sites and blogs out there that try to solve this problem by reading and reviewing short fiction for you, and then giving you the links so you can read the stories yourself. Here are some good sites to check out:
variety-sf.blogspot.com
freesciencefantasy.blogspot.com
freesf.blogspot.com
bestsciencefictionstories.com (my own blog – sorry but I had to include it!)
and, of course, SF Signal has tons of reviews of short science fiction too.
Ok, hopefully this helps.
Rusty – thanks for plugging me. I’d seen this post in my feed, but just noticed the comments thread.
And thanks all for “Sergeant Chip” tip.
