Stargate SG-1 Watchathon - 'Solitudes' (S01E17)

Description: The stargate malfunctions while O'Neill and the SG-1 team are evacuating from a firefight on a hostile planet. Only Teal'C and Daniel make it back to Stargate Command, and a severely wounded O'Neill and Carter find themselves trapped on the icy planet.

Right off the bat we have a gate malfunction that let's the writers add in a new 'feature' of the Stargates that not only ensures the survival of O'Neill and Carter but can also be used in a later episode, this time on purpose. SPOILER: They also add another gate with a DHD on Earth that will, again, be used in future episodes. So what we have is a tale of two story arcs. One features Sam and Jack as they try to activate their gate while also trying to stay alive. This is the better of the two stories, with the interplay between them being the best part.

And what's up with Teal'c doing his best Data impersonation? Buy a contraction Teal'c, please!

The other arc is the 'technobabble' arc as Jackson tries to figure out just what happened and where Carter and O'Neill are. It's just mediocre and brings the entire episode down to just 'okay' levels. One other thing also occurs to me: SPOILER - Given the seriousness of O'Neill's injuries, he makes a remarkable recovery by the next episode! And all it took was a throw away line from Teal'c. The power of the spoken word at it's finest.

One last nit about the ending, so if you haven't seen it, don't read: How in the heck did Hammond and company get from Colorado to Antarctica in what seems like hours? No way. And Carter and O'Neill are waaay down in a crevasse, how did the rescue team spot them? Gah! Upon further reflection, the ending is very abrupt, as if the writers realized "Hey! We're out of time, we need to wrap this up! Everyone's okay! Print it!"

Best Lines:

[Carter is examining O'Neill's injuries]
Carter - "So, what happened?"
O'Neill - "I hit the ground. Go figure."

[Later]
O'Neill - "Come on, help me up."
Carter - "I don't think you should move."
O'Neill - "Probably not, but my butt's freezing to the ground."
