"SF masterpieces ruined by the ending" opens with The Man in the High Castle, by Philip K. Dick.

I have to note that this story doesn't actually end. From the beginning, Dick intended a sequel that would complete the tale (it essentially just stops in the middle). He tried a couple of times. The Ganymede Takeover began as such a sequel, as did Radio Free Albemuth.

The overall problem was that Dick found it extraordinarily painful to put himself back into the minds of Nazis, especially Heydrich.

The Wikipedia article has more on this point.

Actually, it's The World Jones Made that Gilliam wants to adapt.

Ack!  Thanks, Chris.  Correction made.
