Stargate SG-1 Watchathon – ‘Divide And Conquer’ (S04E05)

Description: During a meeting with the Tok’ra high council, Maj. Graham of Stargate Command goes berserk, firing uncontrollably upon the Tok’ra before taking his own life.

Errr, first things first. Just what in the @#$&@$%& is Anise wearing? Good grief. Is that Dominatrix formal wear? I do know that outfit is stunningly gratuitous and a distraction for the rest of the episode. Whose decision was that? I’ve helpfully added a picture so our non-US readers can get a glimpse of the outfit in question.

It seems the Goa’uld have a new trick up their sleeves with the use of sleeper agents or Zatarks (sp?) to try and assassinate high value targets of their enemies. Of course no one but Anise believes these agents exist and it takes the attempted assassination of a Tok’ra Chancellor before Anise is given the go ahead to try and find these sleepers amongst the SGC staff.

Luckily Anise has a machine that just may detect a Zatark and possibly remove the implanted Goa’uld suggestions. When it’s SG-1’s turn to be tested, we get a mini-clip show and one from two episodes previously but it’s short and not too bad, but Anise is still distracting.

Okay, I’m about 12 minutes from the end, O’Neill and Carter are about to be sedated for their own protection and it’s time for a bold and fearless prediction from me: Anise is a Zatark, sent to assassinate SG-1. Maybe that explains the outfit.

Well, looks like I was completely wrong. Instead we get a nice bit of character development between Carter and Jack. We also get some ‘new’ footage from the previous episode “Upgrades” that helps show this. Footage we haven’t seen before until now. Kind of a sneaky way to do this.

Well damn, not too wrong. Martouf was the sleeper agent and Hammond is a darn sneaky character. Too bad Martouf gets whacked, I kinda liked him. At least we see the stakes in play here and finally the Goa’uld start being somewhat more dangerous.

So, overall, much better than the last episode!

Best Lines:

[Hammond gives the order for all of SGC to be screened.]

O’Neill – “This is fun! Who’s next?”

Anise – “SG-1.”

O’Neill – “Doh.”

[Anise kisses O’Neill for the second time.]

O’Neill – “Hey, I could blow here any minute!” (He’s talking about his Zatark programming, get your mind out of the gutter! — Ed.)

  1. I could make a comment about possible reasons for that kind of outfit but it would be mean and possibly unfair … lets just say I’ve seen other shows make their female characters wear similar outfits and I aways have the same thought for why they do it.

  2. Our SF version of the Manchurian Candidate.

Re: Anise’s outfit. Clearly as a high-ranking Tok’ra and warrior she requires something that allows her full mobility for running after escaping goa’uld and engaging in hand-to-hand combat while still allowing her to look fabulous for the occasional function or party.

I agree that this picture is remarkably distracting and gratuitously gratuitous. Please even more helpfully post a much larger, perhaps poster-sized and high-rez version of the same picture, so that I can be even more outraged!

And while you are at it, repost any pictures of Claudia Black in her tight leathery Vala Mal Doran / Kull Disguise getup, so that I can be outraged over her as well.
