I was surprised by how much I enjoyed most--but certainly not all--of the Horus Heresy books, mainly because the present a huge and multifaceted epic storyline that, at heart, deals with the same subjects that made Herbert's Dune books and Tolkien's Lord of the Rings so gripping: questions of rationality versus mysticism, collective destiny versus individuality, and knowledge versus deception. Unlike the former series, though, the Horus Heresy is an utter tragedy in that it more or less retells the fall of Rome to Christianity and the following Dark Ages, only with lasers, and giant battle-mechs.
