We knew it was coming, but that doesn't make it any less sad...
Green Man Review is reporting that Kage Baker passed away early this morning. They posted this update from Kathleen Bartholomew, Kage Baker's sister and care giver:
She died at 1:15 this morning. She had begun to have difficulty breathing early this evening; I gave her atropine and morphine for the breathing problems and the pain, but by about 8 PM she slipped into unconsciousness. The last thing she requested was to have her pillows adjusted - she said she was more comfortable, and after that she said nothing else. She became unresponsive very shortly thereafter, and by her own request, no heroic efforts were made.She will be missed by many.
Her sister Anne and nieces Kate and Emma were up this weekend, and watched with me for most of the evening. . At about 1 AM her breathing got louder and lighter and more urgent, though her pupils were not responsive to light; there was a rush of bile from her mouth, and then she passed away very quietly in our arms.
Kage's body will go to MedCure, a body donation program working on training surgery students. They will cremate it and return the ashes to me in about 3 weeks. Her ashes will then be scattered half from Catalina Island and half from Plaskett Creek beach near Big Sur.

This news has just rocked my world. Kage was a lovely, kind person who gave StarShipSofa many stories. I find it so hard to believe she won't be here when those great works go up. My heart goes out to all who knew Kage and read her works. She was an amazing person. I'm so glad I had the chance to once or twice say hello.

I only just found out she was ill, and the news that she's already gone is heartbreaking.
I will remember discovering her Company novels after finding out that she was just one of many published and soon-to-be published authors on an obscure bulletin board I frequented, and "Sky Coyote" became the first of many of her books that I bought.
I will remember teasing her for several months more than a few years ago, for forgetting to sign several copies of "Black Projects, White Knights" before she mailed them back to me.
I will remember talking with her on Cover to Cover, and finding out that she had more stories set in the world of "Anvil of the World".
I will remember the wonderful stories she's given the world, and I will miss her.

It certainly seemed inevitable given how she seemed to be rapidly declining. And given that fact, I am glad that she went quickly rather than living a long time in suffering and pain. Although Kage Baker is yet another author who I will not have read prior to her passing, I know from what I've read over the last few weeks that she will be missed in this community.
