Song: Come Sail Away

Artis: Styx

Album: The Grand Illusion

Having kids of your own never ceases to be an eye opening experience. You never know what the little buggers will get into next. Case in point: We recently purchased a new (read: used) car to replace my old one. While my late Taurus had a cassette deck, I used a cassette to mini-jack adapter so I could plug my MP3 player in. The new car has only a CD player and no AUX in or anything. So I was forced to actually unearth my CDs and carry a select few around with me.

It just so happens that Styx is one of my all time favorite bands. Probably because I started listening to them while a freshman in high school, just in time for them to break up. Still, I went out and bought many of their albums (yes, the black shiny spinny things). Later I repurchased them on CD. So of course I pulled The Grand Illusion and was tooling around listening to it. I picked up my middle son from school and we were jamming to Come Sail Away on the way home. Later, I hear the dulcet tones of Dennis DeYoung crooning away in the computer room thanks to the magic of YouTube and my son’s interest in Styx was born. It almost makes you cry.

But what does Come Sail Away have to do with science fiction?

Well, after the really nice piano intro and the rockin’ ‘whale song’ interlude, we get to the meat of the matter when DeYoung sings:

I thought that they were angels,

but to my surprise,

we climbed aboard their starship,

we headed for the skies!

Seems the angels were actually aliens. Excellent! And really, a tenuous link to science fiction allows me to post the following music video.

Check out the band in this glorious early ’80s video and revel in their mustachioed greatness!

And for those of you who were wondering, don’t worry, we’ll get to Mr. Roboto. Oh yes, we will.
