A couple of suggestions would include:

The anthology Swords & Dark Magic: The New Sword & Sorcery, by Jonathan Strahan and Lou Anders.

The work of James Enge. Blood of Ambrose is the first novel in that sequence, but you can get a free short story starring the main character called “Travellers Rest” from Pyr’s website. 

The work of Scott Lynch, starting with The Lies of Locke Lamora
