Sorry, I don't think tie-ins get a bum rap. I haven't read a ton of them, but the 20 or so I have read were mostly poor. The authors seemed sub-par or failed to know how to write a familiar character (Han Solo is almots always written poorly). The only exception I can think of is Timothy Zahn who does decent Star Wars tie-ins.

Given my experiences with tie-ins and the high number of non-tie-ins available I just won't buy a tie-in anymore. I have been burnt too many times.

Just a quick fact correction, Warhammer and Warhammer 40K are the product of Games Workshop, not Game Designer's Workshop, which is an unrelated, out-of-business company.
