A great episode. I’m not sure who I’d pick as a favorite sci-fi character. I always like Duncan Idaho in Dune, and Farscape had a strong cast of characters.

I also say – Let Jeff speak! Every podcast should have somebody who’s not afraid to burst other people’s balloons. Anything that leads to discussion is great. To prevent the show from being a set of serial interviews.

I just found your website/podcast. There’s a lot of interesting stuff, which is cool for SF fans like myself. Interesting to hear your comments on 2011 movies and TV. I didn’t find a lot of TV that interested me other than Fringe (and sometimes the real world Walter grates on me), The Walking Dead, and Face Off (a reality show on the Syfy Channel about making special effects). I did like Sherlock, but I think of it more as detective fiction. And I watched some Dr. Who, but basically have found the new Dr. Who series to be pretty abysmal in the stories and writing, but pretty good special effects.

I did like Source Code, Captain America, and Midnight in Paris (although I guess I thought of it as magic realism or something along that line rather than SF). I didn’t care too much for X-Men, though it was ok. January Jones was ok, she didn’t act too much, thankfully. Her main role is of course visual. Falling Skies I started watching, but just didn’t hold my interest (another banal invasion Earth series). Grimm almost had some promise, but pretty quickly lost its charm. Really The Walking Dead was about it for SF/horror for me. The others I haven’t seen, or have no interest in, which is a bit sad. If I had one question it would be: Why can’t producers/directors get SF right these days? It seems like it would be a fairly easy equation to reach and garner an audience. With CGI effects being more cost effective, plus you wouldn’t even need to use them that much, space opera should be more affordable these days not that a SF series needs to be space opera. It just seems that someone should be able to make something for TV that more SF fans could or should enjoy. Perhaps another topic for discussion might be what SF TV do you consider high watermarks for television.

No, I don’t think it’s a horror movie. The intent of the movie is action in a dark fantasy world. Thus, its Dark Fantasy and not Horror.

Battle Los Angeles is a war movie, not a SF movie. But its okay on those terms, IMO.

I might have added Priest as a “rental” level movie, myself.
