I love doing book trailers for my books because a) they help me to focus on exactly what the basis of the book is and b) they're fun to do. I love working out the script, finding the music and all. I think I do it more for me, as a creative outlet that still keeps me connected to the book I love, rather than because I think it will sell books.

I haven't bought a book myself because if a trailer, but I've been turned off buying a book because of the trailer. So a double-edged sword, perhaps?

...And some of those Kickstarter trailers are unwatchable. Seriously. Little book icons flying out of the screen at you... pictures of kittens... no. Just no.

I'm with some of the entries above saying do it well, or don't do it at all. Of course, there's only so much professional assistance a writer tramp can afford. ;)

I had a thought, JP.

With the rise of Kickstarters, Kickstarters that concentrate on fiction have to produce, as a matter of course, a "book trailer" to promote the kickstarter.

A fascinating insight into the pros and cons--thank you, SFSignal! And yes, I did chuckle over 'The Mongoliad Trailer' with Neal Stephenson.

Another literary genre group it would be interesting to hear from is the Paranormal Urban Fantasy crowd as I am seeing an increasing number of book trailers popping up on blogs there.
