Watched Dredd last night and as a fan of 2000 A.D. I have to say this film is great. It's lean and mean and has no more explanation than it needs. Karl Urban is Judge Dredd. In all the ways that Stallone could never be. The real star though, is Thirlby. She brings the nuance and the moral questioning that Dredd is incapable of. Lena Headly's performance is also top notch. This film should have more success than it's getting and that is a pity. I would much rather see Dredd again than either DKR or The Avengers.

If you want a shocking experience, watch the Asian film, The Raid: Redemption.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1899353/

Bizarrely, it is THE SAME MOVIE only it has richer characterization and is somewhat more reality based. I thought Dredd was a rip of The Raid, but I was incorrect as Dredd was in production long before.

I would love to know the story behind it all!

Leave the back story of Mega City 1 to Sequels. There's an entire wealth of Sci-fi and horror to be had through Dredd. And as for the Stallone thing ... it's like comparing the Tim Burton Batman's to Christopher Nolan's.

Personally I hated the Stallone movie, he clearly had too much say over the character and story. This latest offering looks good and I will be going to see it, in 2d if possible.

I loved it and I was never a Judge Dredd reader. What's killing it is the Stallone movie. Everyone I talk to brings that up. I think it's accessible to newcomers because everything you really need to know is right in front of you. I was glad there wasn't any effort to make this an origin story, they just jumped into it. The slow motion scenes are gorgeous.

***SPOILERISH*** -
Mega-City One's architects seem not to have foreseen the consequences of low railings at high altitudes.

Good review! I first saw the commercial for Dredd and thought, "Great another reboot." And then I saw another commercial and I thought, "This is a ripoff of The Raid." I had no plans on seeing it. But then the reviews started coming in and my buddy from across the Atlantic recommended it. So I do now plan on seeing it. Unfortunately it is pretty dead at box office.

thanks, Derek.

Sight unseen, I expected this to be to be a load of Fail, but if you find it mostly worthy, I might have to go see this--out of 3d if at all possible.
