Brilliant article. Also love the show, and would also like to suggest another referent from another genre: reclusive genius plus intelligent legman is a combo reminiscent of Rex Stout’s Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin. Stout is credited with combining the noir/American detective hero with the eccentric/British amateur sleuth.

I think the referents are wider than this. At least one episode has a nod to The Count of Monte Cristo, and the echoes to the same sources as Batman are many, eg The Shadow, The Spider, and Judex.
