I'd agree with pretty much every word of that review - best Bond in decades, thanks to the decision to use seriously talented folk (actors, scripters, director, cinematographer) in its production, and the courage to do something that, just as you say, abandons the timeless, Peter Pan illusion and often comes across just as a good thriller rather than film #543 in a never-ending, never-changing franchise.

And The Fighting Temeraire's an awesomely good painting, Paul, well worth googling (as are most things Turner did; producing word-class classical artists was not exactly Britain's strong point, but at least we can be proud of Mr. Turner ....). Its inclusion in the film is a perfect example of the thought that's gone into the whole production, since it's all about an old warship, past its usefulness, being dragged off to the breaker's yard by a newer model.

I'd always just assumed that was where Naomi Novik's dragon's name came from, it being a fighting dragon of the same period - a very, very clever bit of name-borrowing if so, an incredibly fortuitous coincidence if not.

Bond considers J. M. W. Turner’s painting The Fighting Temeraire

I had not heard of this painting. I wonder if Naomi Novik got the idea for the name of her dragon from it...

Anyway, thanks for the review, Derek. :)
