It’s been twenty five years since the release of the first Culture novel by Iain M. Banks. Today, over at the Kirkus Reviews Blog, I take a look at the series over the past two-and-a-half decades.

Excellent article, especially the quick summaries of each novel. I’ve only read two Culture novels so far, but I’m already a fan, and a friend recently gifted me with like 5 more in the series.
These are the best series – the ones where you can jump in just about anywhere and don’t have to worry about tracking down that always elusive first book.
I’m not saying this to get a reaction, as I’m generally interested in what I’m missing. Why is Banks so well liked? I read Consider Phelbas and I just don’t see the quality that everyone talks about. Is that Consider Phelbas his worst book?
