ICEFALL by Matthew J. Kirby, about the daughter of a viking warlord and household wintering on the edge of a glacier until her father returns from war and facing dangers within and without while trying to find her place in a warrior society. It’s a middle-grade novel and it won an Edgar last year. One of the best things I read in 2012.

Moorcock’s lesser-known novel “The Ice Schooner” takes place during a future ice age. Very nice evocation of a winter world.

The Dark is Rising is one of my favorites as it got me into fantasy as a youth. The whole award-winning sequence fantastic. The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is another great classic.

I have to say that I have this sudden, almost overwhelming urge, to go read The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I’ve only read the story once and that was several years ago aloud to my young daughter…who is now 20, so its been a looong time.

Cool to see Leiber’s Swords Against Death mentioned. Such a great one.

I’m currently reading Season of Wonder edited by Paula Guran. It is an anthology of reprint stories that all have a Christmas or Winter element. So far it is a nice collection.

My favorite “winter” novel is Alan Dean Foster’s “Icerigger.” The feudal alien species that a group of shipwreckees meet, the Tran, get around on the ice via claws and leather flaps that catch the wind. The world is very well realized, there are some nice epic battles, and it features one of Foster’s fan-favorite characters in a supporting role, the indomitable Skua September. It’s by far Foster’s best early novel.
