LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (January 15, 2013) – Fantasy Author Patrick Rothfuss, who penned “The Wise Man’s Fear” and “The Name of the Wind,” is on a mission to raise $500,000 for Heifer International by January 18, 2013 through his charity, Worldbuilders. Heifer International is a global development nonprofit working to end hunger and poverty and protect the planet.
Rothfuss is urging his broad following of gamers, sci-fi fans, comic-book collectors and fantasy lovers to donate. To help reach this year’s goal, he is offering donors and fans the chance to make a cameo appearance in an upcoming book, play Dungeons & Dragons with him and other authors, or spend a spring weekend with him and his staff at Heifer Ranch.
Founded in 2008, Worldbuilders, which uses the collective power of readers, fellow authors and book lovers to make the world a better place, has raised more than $1M for Heifer International. As of Monday, January 14, Worldbuilders had raised an impressive $310,903, and Rothfuss remains optimistic that his fan base will rally together to reach the fundraising goal.
“All over the world, Heifer promotes education, sustainable agriculture, local industry and clean water,” said Rothfuss. “The organization teaches families to become self-reliant for the long term through training and gifts of livestock and crops. Thanks to the important work of the organization, once impoverished families now not only have milk to drink, warm clothes to wear and eggs to eat, but the knowledge and tools to take care of themselves.”
In 2008, Rothfuss wrote to his blog readers: “If we raise a couple thousand dollars for [Heifer International], it will make peoples’ lives better. A couple thousand dollars means little kids get milk to drink. It means families get sheep, which means wool for warm blankets and clothes. It means better wells, so moms with babies can have clean water to drink. I think this is something we can all get behind, can’t we?”
